Earth Day 2024 – Planet vs. Plastic

Each year on 22nd April, the global community comes together to mark Earth Day and the theme for 2024 is ‘Planet vs. Plastic’ and here at Kuredu Resort Maldives we are working very hard towards a plastic free future.

We have a state-of-the-art desalination plant that uses the science of reverse osmosis to turn the plentiful supply of seawater into delicious drinking water, and we supply it in reusable glass bottles. We also purchase only drinks packaged in glass bottles or aluminium tins, and our efforts are saving an estimated 500,000 plastic bottles from being used each year! Kuredu is proud to work with Parley for the Oceans, an advocate of avoiding the use of single-use plastics, and who collect from our resort the plastic debris washed in by the ocean currents so it can be disposed of responsibly to prevent it from simply ending up back in the ocean.

We also say ‘no’ to single-use plastic straws, and have instead replaced them with reusable straws. We provide Eco bottles in guest rooms which can be filled for a small fee and taken on excursions. Plastic rubbish bags have been totally eliminated from guest rooms and instead there are environmental bags and we encourage our guests to take any plastic bottles they brought to the Maldives, home with them to be recycled or disposed of responsibly. Guest room amenities are provided in cardboard or paper packaging rather than plastic and we are phasing in wooden bathroom amenities such as toothbrushes and combs.

At Kuredu we support Earth Day’s call for the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040 and an ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for generations to come. By being more mindful of how we use plastics, we can help the planet win the war on plastics so, reuse what plastics you already have, opt for plastic free products when buying new as a reduction in demand is the only way to reduce production.
