Turtle Tales – A Snorkeling Story from Kuredu Lagoon

It starts the moment you step onto the jetty. The sun is high, the lagoon sparkles, and the air carries that distinct scent of sea salt and freedom. For most, it’s the beginning of a Maldivian getaway. But for some, those who know, it’s turtle time.
You don’t even have to go far. Just a few sandy steps from the arrival jetty at Kuredu Island Resort & Spa, and you’re already looking out into the calm, inviting waters of the house reef and lagoon. If you’re lucky, and here, luck visits often, you’ll spot the rounded silhouette of a Green Turtle rising for a breath, its shell gleaming under the midday sun.

This is Kuredu. A family-friendly paradise where lazy afternoons turn into unexpected adventures. And this, right here in the shallows, is one of its most enchanting secrets. Just before the group sets off into the lagoon, Charles Andres, Kuredu’s Recreation Manager, flashes his signature smile and calls out to the guests gathered at the edge of the jetty:
“We’re not just going to snorkel today -we’re going to meet some of Kuredu’s most graceful residents. The turtles don’t always follow a schedule, but they do love this lagoon. So, stay relaxed, stay curious -and who knows, maybe you’ll swim side-by-side with one!”
There’s a buzz in the group -some nervous, some giddy-but Charles has a way of putting everyone at ease. With years of guiding snorkelers and helping first-timers fall in love with the sea, he knows that what they’re about to experience is often more than just a vacation memory.
“Every time I bring guests here,” he adds, adjusting his mask, “someone comes out of the water a different person. There’s just something about seeing a turtle in the wild-it’s quiet, it’s beautiful, and it reminds you how lucky we are to share this planet.”
And with that, they slip into the lagoon, following Charles into a world of coral gardens, darting reef fish, and-if fortune allows-a turtle gliding gracefully beneath the sunlit sea.

“I saw three turtles,” a guest whispered with sun-drenched awe, still dripping from the water. “All Green Turtles. But the little one? Oh, he stole the show. He kept going up and down, swirling and spinning like he was performing just for us.”
Nearby, a burst of laughter erupts from a group of snorkelers floating over the reef.

“Forget finding eye candy, I’m hoping to find a gold-plated turtle!” one woman jokes as she dives back in, her GoPro in hand. It’s not just about marine life here. It’s about the joy it sparks. The kind that stays with you long after your tan fades.

More Than Just Turtles

The lagoon is full of life. On any given snorkel, you might find yourself floating above shimmering schools of parrotfish, snappers, unicorn fish, butterflyfish, and yes, even the curious triggerfish, who’ve grown used to their daily audience.
Sometimes, a baby blacktip reef shark will zip past. Sometimes, a stingray will flap silently beneath you like a shadow. And the corals, delicate yet vibrant, paint a living canvas beneath the sea’s surface. First-time snorkelers often come out of the water speechless, eyes wide, hearts full.
Because in that moment, hovering above the reef, watching a turtle paddle gently by, you realize something humbling: the world beneath the water is so much bigger than we imagine. And we’re only catching a glimpse.
