World Environment Day

05 Jun 2023
Kuredu Maldives Resort

5th June 2023 is the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, and each year the Kuredu community joins millions of others across the globe in marking this special day for planet Earth. The theme this year is ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’, something we are working very hard towards here at our resort.

We have a state-of-the-art desalination plant that uses the science of reverse osmosis to turn the plentiful supply of seawater into delicious drinking water, and we supply it in reusable glass bottles. We also purchase only drinks packaged in glass bottles or aluminium tins, and our efforts are saving an estimated 500,000 plastic bottles from being used each year! Kuredu is proud to work with Parley for the Oceans, an advocate of avoiding the use of single-use plastics, and who collect from our resort the plastic debris washed in by the ocean currents so it can be disposed of responsibly to prevent it from simply ending up back in the ocean.

Here at Kuredu Resort Maldives we are surrounded by the beauty of nature, one peek below the surface of the ocean reveals a thriving marine ecosystem of seagrass meadows and coral reefs teeming with life – from tiny shrimps to magnificent sharks and rays. Our environment is never taken for granted, we know how fortunate we are to be its guardians and are mindful of the need to preserve both the ocean and our island home. Our Marine Center is dedicated to monitoring the thriving (yet still endangered worldwide) population of sea turtles residing at our reefs and also in educating guests about the marine environment and these fascinating creatures – it is through education and knowledge that change can be achieved. The diving and snorkelling practices at Kuredu are sympathetic to our delicate surroundings with briefings that impart knowledge of the fragility of the reefs and creatures living there. There are plenty of eco-friendly watersports on offer for guests of all ages to enjoy, including those that harness wind power and those that need your muscle power! On land we say no to plastic in the hope that no more will be added to the oceans of the world, we air dry as much laundry as possible, use solar power to contribute to our energy needs and source locally whenever we can – even growing some of our own produce on the island.

When looking at the problem our planet is facing it is easy to feel overwhelmed but every action counts, no matter how small, so join us as we celebrate World Environment Day – let’s all commit to making greener choices. Hang your laundry in the sun, say no to plastic, and take as many other small steps for the environment as you can whilst encouraging others to join you – we can’t turn back time but together we can make a difference!
