Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet: Happy World Oceans Day!
The Maldives is unique in many ways!
The whole country is about the size of Portugal, but that includes the sea – a lot of it! More than 99% of the Maldives consists of water, with a vast majority of the islands lying less than one meter above mean sea level.
As such, it is the most watery nation on the planet, and World Oceans Day, celebrated each year on 8th June, is a well-timed opportunity for all of us to give a big shout-out to this incredible ecosystem.
You know that the ocean plays a big part in the whole life on Earth story. But do you know exactly how it fits it?
More than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the ocean (that’s more than all of the world’s rainforests combined), it is the #1 source of protein for more than a billion people, it regulates our climate, absorbs carbon dioxide, holds 97% of Earth’s water, and supports the greatest abundance of life on our planet. More than 60% of the world’s population lives on or near the coast, and it also provides a livelihood, recreation, beauty, wonder, and untapped scientific discovery, leading to new medications, foods, and advanced technologies.
The ocean is the heart of our planet and we all depend on it!
